It’s Official: Universal United Kingdom Resort — Everything We Know

In a landmark announcement made today, the UK government and Comcast NBCUniversal have officially unveiled the name, funding package, and full investment commitment for what is set to become Europe’s first Universal theme park. The park will be named Universal United Kingdom Resort, and the combined public and private investment in the project totals a staggering £7.3 billion ($9.8 billion).

The Name Is Revealed

After months of anticipation — with fans speculating over names like “Universal Studios Great Britain” — the future entertainment resort complex has officially been confirmed as Universal United Kingdom Resort, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves visiting the Bedford site today where construction is set to soon begin, and meeting the first UK team members already employed on the project.

Reeves was joined by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who hosted Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts and Universal Destinations & Experiences Chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury at 11 Downing Street to unveil the name and logo.

The Investment Breakdown

This is one of the most significant entertainment investment deals in British history.

NBCUniversal will invest over £5 billion ($6.7 billion) in the resort complex across an expected five-year construction period ahead of the park’s scheduled 2031 opening, plus an additional £1 billion ($1.3 billion) in capital investment in the first 10 years of operation.

The UK government is supporting the project with £1.3 billion in regional and local community infrastructure investment, which will include improved transport links for both local residents and UK and international visitors.

The government’s £1.3 billion package includes a £400 million grant for the Regional Growth Fund — payable once the park and resort are open — and £438 million from DCMS for community infrastructure, to be paid once Universal has completed that infrastructure. The project is also part of the government’s Modern Industrial Strategy plan to grow business investment in the creative industries from £17 billion to £31 billion by 2035.

It’s worth noting that the majority of the government’s contribution will be directed toward improving infrastructure surrounding the resort rather than funding the park itself, with transport upgrades including improvements to Wixams railway station and new direct slip roads connecting the development to the A421.

Jobs, Visitors & Economic Impact

The scale of the economic opportunity here is extraordinary. The DCMS estimates the park will create 28,000 jobs in total — 20,000 during the five-year construction phase, and 8,000 permanent roles when the resort opens in 2031. The theme park is expected to attract millions of visitors per year, including over one million annual overseas visitors.

By 2055, Universal estimates the project could contribute nearly £50 billion to the UK economy, with around 8.5 million visitors expected in its first year of operation — which would position it among the most significant new tourism destinations in Europe.

Roughly 80% of employees are expected to be sourced from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes, making this a hugely significant moment for the local community.

Where Is It Being Built?

The resort is being constructed on a former brickworks site in Bedfordshire, approximately 45 minutes north of London, on a 500-acre plot of land. Early development activity has already begun.

The initial phase of the theme park is planned to occupy approximately 476 acres, with provisions for future expansion of the site to a maximum of 700 acres.

Construction Phases — What’s Happening & When?

The next phase of construction includes water drainage and land grading work for the theme park site itself, preparing it for full construction. The latter half of this year will see utility pipe installations for the theme park areas and more. The resort remains on target for a 2031 grand opening at the latest.

Work started in 2024 on a previously planned two-platform station, with £28 million already spent, but construction was put on hold so that a new, larger four-platform station could be designed instead — a sign of the ambition and scale being planned for visitor capacity.

Water infrastructure is also being addressed, with Veolia developing a new water treatment facility to meet operational demand while reducing pressure on local resources.

What Will Be Inside?

While Universal has been tight-lipped on specific attractions, large media outlets including the BBC have reported that expected attractions could include experiences based on James Bond, Paddington, and The Lord of the Rings.

Initial plans for the resort complex also feature a 500-room hotel and an integrated retail, dining and entertainment complex. It will be the first Universal-branded theme park in both the UK and Europe.
