Welcome to Bedford Thrills — Europe’s First Universal Studios Theme Park Is Coming to Our Backyard

By Iain White | Bedford Thrills | May 06 2026

I’ll be honest with you — when I first heard that Universal Studios was seriously considering Bedford as the location for a brand-new theme park, I thought someone was pulling my leg. Bedford? The market town famous for its Embankment, its Saturday market, and John Bunyan? Turns out, yes — *that* Bedford. And I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

My name’s Iain. I’m a local blogger and I live just a short drive from what will soon become one of the most talked-about entertainment destinations in the entire world. When something this monumental happens on your doorstep, you don’t just sit back and watch it unfold — you grab a notebook, start a website, and get stuck in. That’s exactly what Bedford Thrills is all about.

This site is going to be your go-to source for everything Universal Studios Bedford — from the latest construction updates and planning news, to what it all means for our town, our businesses, and our community. Whether you’re a local resident trying to make sense of what’s happening, a theme park enthusiast tracking every development, or someone who’s just heard the news and wants to know more — you’re in the right place. Pull up a chair. This is going to be a thrilling ride.

The Numbers That Should Stop You in Your Tracks

Before we get into the community impact and what all of this means for Bedford, let me hit you with a few numbers — because they genuinely are jaw-dropping.

476 acres — the size of the initial theme park site (with planning for expansion up to 700 acres)
£50 billion — the projected boost to the UK economy by 2055
28,000 jobs — created in total: 20,000 during construction, and 8,000 permanent roles once the doors open
80% of those permanent staff positions are expected to be filled by people from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes
500-room hotel — planned as part of the resort complex
2031 — the target opening date, with construction already underway

To put the scale of this into perspective, Disneyland Paris — Europe’s most visited theme park — attracted 10.4 million visitors in 2023 and occupies a site that Universal Bedford’s plans would dwarf. The nearest rival in Europe for sheer site size, Europa-Park in Germany, covers around 230 acres and draws roughly 5.6 million visitors per year. PortAventura in Spain, considered one of the continent’s premier theme parks, covers just 260 acres and sees around 4 million visitors annually. Universal Studios Bedford — at up to 700 acres at full expansion — has the potential to be in a completely different league.

This isn’t just a theme park. This is a statement.

First in Europe — Why That Matters

Here’s the headline that really puts this into context: Universal Studios Bedford will be the first Universal-branded theme park and resort in Europe.

Universal previously had a presence in Spain through Universal Mediterranea (now known as PortAventura), but that was sold back in 2004. Since then, Europe has been without a Universal park — for over 20 years. That gap is about to be filled, right here, a few miles south of Bedford town centre.

Universal currently operates parks in Orlando Florida, Hollywood California, Osaka Japan, Beijing China, and Sentosa Singapore. A newly opened Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas, Nevada and a soon to launch Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas. The Bedford resort will be the eighth Universal Studios resort in the world, and by the looks of the plans, it intends to make an entrance. Multiple themed lands, state-of-the-art immersive rides, live entertainment, a hotel complex, and dedicated retail and dining zones — all built from the ground up, on a former brickworks site near Kempston Hardwick.

There’s already been speculation about which franchises could feature — think Jurassic World, Harry Potter, Despicable Me, and potentially even some quintessentially British icons like Paddington Bear or James Bond. No official confirmation yet, but the very idea of it is exciting enough.

Compare this to what the UK currently offers: Alton Towers welcomes around 2.1 million visitors per year, while Thorpe Park attracts roughly 1.9 million. Universal Studios Bedford, modelled on the scale of parks like Universal Orlando, has the ambition to attract a level of international tourism that the UK theme park market has simply never seen before.

Universal Studios will be located in Kempston Hardwick, south of Bedford centre, UK.

What This Means for Bedford — and Why It’s Bigger Than Rollercoasters

I’ve lived near Bedford long enough to know that people sometimes underestimate what this town has to offer. But even the most optimistic local couldn’t have dreamt up something quite like this.

Let’s talk about what a development of this scale actually means for a market town and its surrounding area.

Jobs and livelihoods are the obvious starting point. With 20,000 construction jobs coming first, and then 8,000 permanent roles in hospitality, tourism, and the creative industries, this is transformative employment for the region. And it’s not just the theme park itself — think hotels, restaurants, transport operators, security firms, retail, and all the supply chains that feed into an operation this size. Universal has already committed to working with local colleges and universities on apprenticeships, internships, and training — real career pathways, built right here.

Local businesses stand to benefit enormously. Cafes, B&Bs, restaurants, shops — everything within the orbit of Bedford is going to feel the pull of millions of visitors passing through. The hospitality sector in particular has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to grow and evolve. Smart local business owners are already starting to think about this – and I hope to chat to a few of them to see what plans they have in store.

Transport and infrastructure will also see significant investment. The plans include expanding Wixams railway station, building a new station on the East West Main Line, and adding dedicated slip roads from the A421. The East West Rail connection between Oxford and Cambridge — long planned and long delayed — suddenly has a very powerful new argument for accelerated delivery. Better connectivity doesn’t just serve the theme park — it improves life for every commuter, resident, and business in the area for decades to come.

House Prices – And then there’s the wider ripple effect as house prices in and around Bedford are likely to respond to this kind of anchor investment. The improved transport links, increased economic activity, and raised profile of the area as a destination typically push property values upward — something for existing homeowners to consider, and something to be mindful of for first-time buyers hoping to get on the ladder locally before the momentum builds.

Beyond bricks and mortar, there’s something harder to quantify but just as important: civic pride. Bedford is about to be on the world map in a way it never has been before. A Universal Studios resort sitting roughly 45 minutes north of London — accessible to a city of 9 million people, as well as millions of international tourists already visiting the UK every year — puts Bedford in an extraordinary position.

Where We Are Right Now — and the Road to 2031

So, what’s actually happened so far, and where does the project stand today?

The story really starts in August 2023, when Comcast (Universal’s parent company) quietly acquired the 476-acre site near Kempston Hardwick. By December 2023, the plans were officially announced. A public consultation followed in spring 2024, gathering over 6,000 responses. In April 2025, Prime Minister Keir Starmer formally confirmed government support and a multi-billion-pound investment deal. And in December 2025, planning permission was granted via a Special Development Order (SDO) by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Then, on 12 January 2026, construction officially began. The diggers are on site. The borehole drilling and ground surveys are underway. It’s real.

Here’s a rough sense of what the next five years might look like:

2026 — Groundwork: Site preparation, infrastructure development, land clearance, and enabling works. The foundations of something extraordinary start being laid.

2027 — Main Construction Begins: Major structural work gets underway — roads, utilities, and the first physical shapes of themed lands and resort buildings start to emerge.

2028-2029 — Peak Build: Construction reaches its peak. Estimates suggest up to 5,000 workers on site simultaneously. The skyline near Kempston Hardwick begins to transform.

2030 — Final Phases: The park takes its full shape. Theming, landscaping, fit-out, and testing of attractions. Early recruitment begins. Marketing campaigns start reaching global audiences.

2031 — Opening: If all goes to plan, Europe gets its first Universal Studios resort. Bedford becomes a global destination.

Now — and I want to be straight with you here — this is a £multi-billion, five-year construction project. There will be bumps. There will be delays, unexpected challenges, planning tweaks, and probably a few moments where local patience is tested. That’s the nature of something this ambitious. But the fundamentals are solid: the land has been purchased, the planning permission has been granted, and construction has already started. This is happening.

Why Bedford Thrills Exists

That’s precisely why I’ve started this site. Because over the next five years, there’s going to be a lot of noise — good and bad — around this project. Planning updates, construction milestones, job announcements, transport news, community impact discussions, speculation, rumours, and everything in between.

Bedford Thrills will be here to cut through that noise and give you clear, honest, up-to-date information from someone who lives locally and cares about what this means for our community. I’m not a PR agency. I’m not a spokesperson. I’m a local with a deep interest in what’s unfolding on our doorstep.

Upcoming posts will cover: what we know about the planned themed lands and attractions; how local businesses can position themselves to benefit; the transport improvements in detail; job and career opportunities as they emerge; and regular construction progress updates as the site develops.

If you’re as excited about this as I am — and how could you not be — then bookmark this page, share it with your friends, join our mailing list and come back regularly. The journey to 2031 starts now.

Let’s go.
