Watch the moment bridge hit at least 45 times is driven into again

The Trafle Mill railway bridge in Gowerton, Swansea, known as the most frequently struck bridge in Wales, was hit again on 25 October by a utilities lorry carrying wooden poles and a crane arm. Network Rail reported that the bridge had been struck 33 times in the decade before 2020 and 12 times since 2023. Despite sensors and warning signs designed to alert drivers to the 11ft (3.3m) height restriction, the lorry collided with the bridge, causing a loud impact.

Swansea council confirmed the warning system was functioning correctly and urged delivery companies to remind drivers of the restrictions. Network Rail stated that collision protection beams and illuminated signage are in place to reduce damage risks and that no damage was found after safety inspections following the latest incident. The repeated collisions highlight ongoing challenges in preventing vehicle strikes on low-clearance infrastructure despite safety measures.
