Warrant for dad of A66 teen over funeral assault

An arrest warrant has been issued for Gye Worthy, 40, who failed to appear for sentencing after admitting common assault and resisting arrest during his son Cole Worthy's funeral at Teesside Crematorium. Cole, 17, was among seven people, including two police officers, killed in a head-on collision on the A66 in South Bank on 22 August. The crash involved a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way and a marked police car.

Worthy was also due to be sentenced for stealing four bottles of wine. The court ordered that the warrant be issued without bail, meaning Worthy will be held in custody once found. The funeral where the assault occurred coincided with that of PC Matthew Blades, one of the officers killed in the crash. Prior to the collision, a property linked to the Worthy family had been rammed by a car.
