Klevi and Nivalda Pirjani, a couple from Wirral, Merseyside, have had their sentences increased following their conviction for the murder of their three-month-old son, Miguel. Initially sentenced in April to minimum terms of 19 and 15 years respectively, the Court of Appeal raised these to 21 years and six months for Klevi and 17 years and nine months for Nivalda. Miguel died in November 2024 after suffering severe head injuries and was found to have endured 41 separate bone fractures from multiple incidents of abuse.
The Attorney General referred the sentences as unduly lenient, with the Court of Appeal judges highlighting the routine and escalating assaults that culminated in Miguel's death. The court criticised the original sentences for underestimating the aggravating factors, emphasising the particularly callous nature of the murder. Both parents were described as encouraging each other in the abuse, though it remains unclear who inflicted the fatal injuries.
