Over 100 arrests since Live Facial Recognition introduced

Since its introduction last year, Bedfordshire Police's Live Facial Recognition (LFR) system has been deployed over 80 times across the county, resulting in more than 100 arrests. The technology scans faces in public spaces in real-time, comparing them against police watchlists to identify individuals wanted for various offences, including habitual knife carrying, domestic abuse, firearm possession, and outstanding court warrants. It has been used at major events such as the Bedford River Festival and Luton Carnival, enhancing police visibility and support.

Sergeant Kim Coates, the LFR operational lead, emphasised that the system allows a proactive policing approach, helping to apprehend those causing harm while reassuring the community. Officers verify matches before taking action, and biometric data is deleted immediately if no match is found. The technology also aids in locating vulnerable or missing persons, highlighting its broader public safety role despite ongoing privacy concerns.
