Since its introduction last year, Bedfordshire Police's Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology has contributed to over 100 arrests across the county. The system has been used more than 80 times, generating over 260 alerts that identified high-risk offenders, habitual knife carriers, and individuals subject to Domestic Violence Protection Orders. Deployments have taken place during targeted operations in town centres and major events such as the Bedford River Festival.
The technology works by scanning live camera feeds against police biometric watchlists, with officers verifying matches before engaging individuals. Bedfordshire Police highlight that LFR not only aids in apprehending offenders but also supports locating vulnerable or missing persons. Sergeant Kim Coates, LFR Operational Lead, emphasised the technology's role in proactive policing and community reassurance. Details of all deployments and outcomes are published regularly on the Bedfordshire Police website.
