The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into a senior detective from Derbyshire Police over alleged gross misconduct related to the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The probe began in August following a voluntary referral by Derbyshire Police after an internal review raised concerns about the officer's use of AI tools.
The IOPC alleges the detective used AI to create policy decisions, assess and manage risk, justify decision-making, and input sensitive operational and personal case data, potentially breaching force guidelines. Derbyshire Police had authorised the use of Microsoft Copilot in May 2025 with strict conditions prohibiting the input of sensitive or personal data. The investigation will examine the officer's use of Copilot from May 2025 to June 2026 to determine if professional standards were violated.
