Anthony Lee, the former Conservative Party director of campaigning, and his wife Laura have received suspended prison sentences after admitting to cheating by placing bets on the date of the 2024 general election using inside information. The couple stood to win over £23,000 had their actions not been uncovered. Lee was sentenced to 10 months and two weeks, suspended for 12 months, while Laura Lee received a four-month and two-week suspended sentence. Amy Hind, a former Tory employee, also received a six-month suspended sentence for similar offences.
The court heard that Lee used information from a private Downing Street meeting convened by then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to place 71 bets, while his wife placed eight. Judge Tony Baumgartner highlighted that their conduct risked undermining public confidence in the Conservative Party, the democratic process, and the integrity of gambling. Other individuals charged in connection with the case face trials in 2027 and 2028.
