Bedford council speaker remanded in custody after threats to kill charge

Tim Casswell, a Bedford Borough councillor and the speaker of Bedford Borough Council, has been remanded in custody after being charged with threats to kill, threats to damage or destroy property, and possession of an offensive weapon in a private place. The 66-year-old councillor appeared at Luton Magistrates’ Court on October 26 and is due to appear at Luton Crown Court on November 27.

Bedfordshire Police responded to a welfare concern on Crispin Drive, Bedford, shortly before 7.15pm, deploying specialist firearms officers to manage the situation safely. The Bedford Borough Liberal Democrat Group has removed the whip from Casswell, and the party has refrained from commenting, citing the ongoing police investigation.
