Daughter wins £127k claim for caring for mum at home

Bern Rogers from Bristol has won a High Court ruling entitling her to £127,500 from her late mother Sheila's estate for providing care at home during Sheila's final two-and-a-half years. Sheila, who had dementia and other health issues, moved in with Bern in 2017 and expressed a clear wish to be cared for by her daughter rather than receive professional home care or enter a residential home. Bern and her mother had an informal agreement that she would be paid for the round-the-clock care she provided.

Following Sheila's death in 2020, Bern took £100,000 from the estate, which led to criminal charges of fraud and theft; however, she was acquitted in 2022. The estate's executor, Bern's brother Andrew, has stated a willingness to pay genuine expenses but plans to appeal the payment ruling. Legal experts have described the case as "hugely significant," potentially influencing future claims for unpaid care within families.
