Bedfordshire soldiers laid to rest on the Western Front

Two soldiers from the Bedfordshire Regiment who died during the First World War have been laid to rest in France over a century after their deaths. Private George McIntosh, who was killed in action in April 1917, was identified through DNA testing after his remains were found during hospital construction near Lens. He was buried alongside an unidentified Bedfordshire soldier at Loos British Cemetery Extension on 20 October, with ten family members attending, including his great-nephew from the USA.

The identification and burial were organised by the Ministry of Defence's Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC), highlighting ongoing efforts to honour soldiers lost in the Battle of Arras. The discovery and reburial provide families with closure and preserve the memory of those who fought in significant battles such as the advance following the capture of Vimy Ridge. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission will maintain the graves permanently, while efforts continue to identify the second soldier.
