Chris Brown given suspended eight-month prison sentence over nightclub attack

US singer Chris Brown has received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray for striking a man twice in the head with a glass tequila bottle in a London nightclub in February 2023. The attack occurred at the private members' club Tape in Mayfair and left the victim, music producer Abraham 'Abe' Diaw, requiring hospital treatment. Brown's vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who also pleaded guilty to affray, received a four-month suspended sentence. Both were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.

Judge Tony Baumgartner described Brown's actions as "plainly dangerous" and noted the violence was intense and posed risks to others in the crowded nightclub. Despite the seriousness, the judge considered Brown's guilty plea, compliance with bail, and family circumstances, concluding his risk of reoffending was low. More serious charges against Brown were dropped following his guilty plea.
