Photographs released by the BBC reveal that a road near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, was riddled with potholes days before a fatal crash on 17 March. Declan Berry, driving a VW Polo at approximately 90mph on North Brink, struck a pothole, causing the car to enter the River Nene and resulting in the deaths of Berry and 16-year-old passenger Eden Bunn. Cambridgeshire County Council had inspected the road four days prior and scheduled repairs for 98 potholes, which were carried out after the crash while the road was closed.
An inquest heard that the driver's excessive speed was the primary factor in the accident, though the road's poor condition also contributed. The council had received 127 complaints about the road before the incident. A spokesperson emphasised that safety remains a priority and that urgent defects are addressed promptly across the county's extensive road network.
