Bedfordshire fire chief warns major infrastructure projects bring significant risks

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Authority has approved a draft five-year Community Risk Management Plan (CRMP) for 2027 to 2032, addressing rising hazards linked to major infrastructure projects and population growth in the county. Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson highlighted significant risks arising from developments such as the expansion of London Luton Airport, the East West Rail project, the Universal theme park resort, and new settlement proposals. These changes, combined with climate change, an ageing population, and increased emergency service demand, necessitate adaptation to maintain community safety.

The CRMP, developed after the most comprehensive community risk assessment in the service's history, focuses on prevention, protection, and response strategies. A 12-week public consultation has been launched to gather feedback from Bedfordshire residents, which will help shape the future operations of the fire service. Participants in the consultation can complete an anonymous online questionnaire and enter a prize draw.
