Police yet to receive £2m after A66 crash, says commissioner

Cleveland Police has yet to receive the £2 million funding promised by the government following a fatal crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough on 22 August, which resulted in the deaths of seven people, including two officers. Police and Crime Commissioner Matt Storey stated that the force is still awaiting the funds pledged by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, despite the Home Office assuring the money would be delivered by the end of November.

The crash involved a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the dual carriageway, colliding with a marked police vehicle. The incident has led to extensive policing costs, now forecast to exceed £5 million, due to ongoing investigations and arrests related to organised crime. Storey criticised the current police funding model as unfair to Cleveland Police and urged for immediate release of funds and a review of long-term financial support to ensure sustainable policing in the area.
