‘Sexually obsessed’ stepdad jailed for murdering student

Nathan Owens, 34, from Hartlepool, has been sentenced to a minimum of 35 years in prison for the murder of his stepdaughter, Carla Georgescu, at her university flat in Preston. The 20-year-old second-year student was found dead in February at the University of Lancashire's Ribble Hall, having suffered knife wounds, internal injuries from a sexual assault, and blows to the head. Owens, described by the judge as "sexually obsessed" with Carla, staged the scene to appear as a suicide.

The court heard Owens had a history of indecent behaviour involving Carla and that the attack was premeditated and violent. CCTV footage showed Carla letting Owens into her flat shortly before her death. Owens denied involvement and did not testify. Lancashire Police highlighted the devastating impact on Carla's family, emphasising the betrayal of trust by Owens.
