Charity calls for East West rethink as its says alternative could save £1bn

CPRE Bedfordshire has urged the transport secretary, Heidi Alexander MP, to commission an independent review of the proposed East West Rail (EWR) route between Bedford and Cambridge. The countryside charity argues that a southern alternative, known as Route B, could save taxpayers around £1 billion and avoid significant negative impacts on Bedford residents, rural communities, and the environment. CPRE highlights concerns about Route E, which passes through central Bedford, including the demolition of approximately 70 homes and 30 commercial properties, increased traffic congestion, noise and air pollution, and damage to countryside north of the town.

East West Rail maintains that Route E is the best overall option, citing Bedford’s role as a key interchange for long-distance and commuter rail services. EWR also notes that alternative routes, including bypassing Bedford’s main station, were rejected due to operational considerations. Natalie Wheble, EWR’s external affairs director, emphasised that an independent report found the route selection process sound and that Route E offers the greatest overall benefits, supporting regeneration and economic growth despite the challenges involved.
