A US judge has ordered former President Donald Trump to answer questions under oath by 11 December in his defamation lawsuit against the BBC. Trump is suing over a Panorama episode that edited parts of a speech he gave before the 2021 US Capitol riot, which the BBC later apologised for, acknowledging it gave the mistaken impression that Trump called for violent action.
Trump previously cancelled a deposition scheduled for 16 October, citing national campaign priorities. The judge, US Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett, mandated the deposition unless the discovery period is extended. Trump's lawyers have proposed a later date between 11 and 22 January, disputing claims that he is avoiding the deposition.
The BBC has sought dismissal of the lawsuit, arguing the programme does not meet defamation criteria and was not available in the US. Trump dropped his suit against BBC Studios after it was clarified the commercial arm was not involved in producing the documentary.
