Zack Coughlan, 23, has pleaded guilty to the murder of his housemate Jamie Collins, 21, after initially denying the charge at Bristol Crown Court. The attack occurred on 8 April when Coughlan ambushed Collins in an alleyway near their home, stabbing him more than 30 times before leaving his body outside for eight hours. Coughlan later called the police and was caught on CCTV footage he had installed himself, which recorded the attack and his staged discovery of the body.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth described the killing as a "pre-planned, cold-blooded execution" and highlighted inconsistencies in Coughlan's account, including attempts to dispose of evidence and delay seeking medical help. Collins' family remembered him as a passionate and inclusive young man, studying engineering and robotics at the University of the West of England, with a promising future ahead. Coughlan is due to be sentenced for murder.
