Two re-arrested on suspicion of assisting Iran intelligence after RAF Fairford incident

Two men have been re-arrested on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service following an incident near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire last month, counter-terrorism police have confirmed. The 24-year-old UK national and 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national are suspected of involvement under Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023, with the investigation linked to Iran. The incident began when police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near the US airbase on 27 September, leading to a major response including evacuations and bomb disposal teams. Petrol was found in vans near the base, but no improvised explosive devices were discovered.

Seven men have been arrested in total, with five currently on police bail. Authorities consider Iranian state involvement highly likely and continue to investigate the extent and intent behind the incident. RAF Fairford has been a strategic US Air Force base, recently used for bomber deployments to the Middle East amid tensions with Iran. Following the incident, US bombers were withdrawn from the base as a precaution, with officials citing unspecified threats.
