Bonfire Night policing in Scotland will be ‘largest operation since Trump visit’

Police Scotland is preparing for its largest operation since President Donald Trump's visit in 2025 to manage Bonfire Night on 5 November. Operation Amberlight could see up to 1,700 officers deployed across Scotland, particularly in Edinburgh and Glasgow, to address fireworks-related disorder, a European football match involving Celtic, and potential protests in Glasgow. The operation will be supported by additional public order vehicles and drivers from 18 English and Welsh police forces under mutual aid arrangements.

The police have introduced Fireworks Control Zones (FCZs) in parts of Edinburgh and Glasgow from 30 October to 8 or 9 November, banning the use of pyrotechnics in these areas. This follows recent years of disorder, including petrol bomb attacks on emergency crews and injuries to officers. Operation Amberlight aims to ensure public and emergency service safety through a coordinated approach, building on the annual Operation Moonbeam response to fireworks-related criminality.
