Terminally ill mum who can’t talk, walk or dress herself refused Pip payment

Rachael Field, a 56-year-old mother from Rhondda Cynon Taf diagnosed with terminal tongue cancer and given around three years to live, has been denied Personal Independence Payment (PIP) despite severe disabilities. She cannot eat, talk, dress, or use the toilet independently and relies on a feeding tube and assistance for mobility. Field applied for PIP in May but was awarded zero points across all assessed categories, with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) citing the need for further evidence to complete her claim.

Field's family criticised the PIP assessment process as overly reliant on checklists that fail to capture real-life struggles. Her daughter, Kyra Hawkins-Field, described the refusal as "ridiculous" and launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her mother during her remaining time. The DWP said it had attempted to contact Field to resolve the claim and expressed regret for any distress caused, while the family continues discussions with the department.
