Air ambulance charity launches urgent appeal to help with rising fuel costs

Magpas Air Ambulance, a critical care charity based in Cambridgeshire, has launched an urgent £50,000 winter appeal to address rising aviation fuel costs, which have surged by 82.5% following recent Middle East conflicts. The charity, which receives no government funding, relies entirely on local donations to cover operational expenses. This year, Magpas has responded to over 1,500 emergencies, with each mission costing approximately £3,000.

The appeal highlights the importance of the charity's rapid response capabilities, such as reaching Bedford in as little as seven minutes and providing advanced medical care at scenes like the Bedford train collision. Executive medical director Simon Lewis emphasised that increased call-outs and higher fuel prices threaten their ability to maintain services during the challenging winter months. The charity is encouraging local residents to contribute a one-off £15 donation to help sustain lifesaving missions.
