Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) has launched a 12-week public consultation on its draft Community Risk Management Plan (CRMP) for 2027 to 2032, highlighting significant risks facing the county over the next five years. Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson identified major developments such as the Universal Studios theme park opening near Bedford in 2031, the East West Rail route through the town, the expansion of London Luton Airport, and increased housebuilding as key challenges. These, alongside climate change, an ageing population, and rising emergency service demands, require the service to adapt its strategies.
The consultation follows an unprecedented summer of incidents during a declared drought and is based on the most detailed community risk assessment in BFRS history. The plan outlines four guiding pillars aimed at reducing risks and meeting evolving demands. Residents are encouraged to provide feedback via an anonymous survey, which could enter participants into a prize draw, to help shape the future operations of the fire service.
